서 문

이 책을 발간하면서 훌륭한 원고를 쓰서 보내주신 여러 저자분들께 먼저 깊은 감사를 드립니다.
필자가 의과대학을 다니던 시절에는 복부대동맥류abdominal aortic aneurysm, AAA라는 병은 서
양인들에서 생기는 질환으로 여겨왔었고, 이 병에 대해 강의를 들은 기억이 별로 없었습니다.
근자에 우리 사회에서도 복부대동맥류가 흔히 발견되는 것은 발병률이 증가한 탓도 있겠지만,
우리 사회에 CT나 초음파검사 같은 영상의학 진단이 보편화되면서 그간 진단되지 않았던 환자들이 
비교적 짧은 기간 동안에 많이 색출된 효과도 있다고 생각합니다.
복부대동맥류는 구미에서는 가장 흔한 동맥질환인 하지동맥 폐색증, 경동맥 협착증과 함께
혈관의학 영역의 중요한 질환의 하나로 이미 잘 알려져 있던 질환입니다.
필자는 혈관외과 의사로서 지금까지 경험한 수술 환자들 중 참담한 시련을 안겨준 환자도 복부대동맥류 
환자였고, 외과의사로서 큰 보람을 느낄 수 있게 해준 환자도 복부대동맥류 환자였다고 기억됩니다.
근래에 혈관내 치료endovascular treatment의 발전에 힘입어 복부대동맥류의 치료는 그야말로
획기적으로 큰 변화가 있었습니다. 발전하는 의료 장비와 의료기술에 힘입어 복부대동맥류 치료는 다른 
어떠한 분야의 의학보다도 더 큰 변화를 맞아야만 했습니다. 변화된 의학에 발 맞추기 위해서 지금까지 
습득한 지식이나 기술과는 전혀 다른 새로운 의학 지식과 기술 습득을 필요로 했던 분야도 이 분야였습니다.
많은 변화를 보인 의학의 한 부분인 복부대동맥류를 주제로 국내의 많은 전문가들의 최신 지견을 모아서 
책을 발간하는 목적은 우리의 후진들이 우리 보다는 좀더 쉽게 이 분야에 접근할 수 있도록 해주기를 
희망하기 때문입니다. 아울러 발전하는 우리나라의 혈관의학 분야에 이 책이 작은 디딤돌이 되기를 
희망하고 있습니다.
특히 책을 준비하면서 저를 감동시킨 점은 본서의 집필을 맡아주신 저자 분들은 각자 전문분야가 다른 
분들이 많다는 사실입니다. 의학을 보는 시각이 다소 다를 수도 있는 여러 분야의 전문가들이 한 가지 
질환을 주제로 자신의 견해를 기술하고, 이것들이 모이면 지식은 더 견고해지고, 
한 분야의 발전을 가져올 수 있다는 것을 생각할 때 이 책의 발간은 의미 있는 일이라 생각합니다.
수술에 대한 지식이 부족한 사람은 이 책을 통해 혈관 수술에 대한 지식을 얻을 수 있고, 혈관내 치료에 
대한 지식이 부족한 사람은 이 책을 통해 혈관내 치료에 대한 더 많은 정보와 기술을 습득하는데 도움을 
줄 수 있다고 생각합니다. 
의학이 발전함에 따라 과거에 없었던 새로운 치료방법이 소개되고 이와 관련한 새로운 합병증들이 나타나므로 
이것은 우리가 극복해야 할 새로운 과제가 되었습니다. 한 선배 교수가 내게 말하기를 “교수가 되어서 자기가 
가지고 있는 지식이나 기술을 후진에게 빠짐없이 가르쳐 주지 않는다면 가르치는 사람으로서 자격이 없다.”라고 
한 말을 기억합니다. 우리 모두가 매일 변화하는 새로운 의학을 배워간다는 겸손한 자세로, 그리고 나의 지식을
주변 다른 분들과 나누어 가진다는 마음으로 이 책의 발간사를 대신하고 싶습니다. 
좋은 책을 만들어 주기 위해 애써 주신 모든 저자 그리고 가본의학서적 출판 임직원분들께 다시 한 번 감사의 
마음을 표하며, 마지막으로 이 책이 학생, 의학자, 의료관련 종사자들에게도 좋은 지침서가 될 수 있기를 희망하고, 
더 나아가 복부대동맥류 환자의 치료에 조금이나마 도움이 되기를 희망합니다.
