1994년에 시작된 삼성서울병원 산부인과의 역사가 어느덧 12년이라는 세월이 흘렀습니다. 지난 12년 동안 삼성서울병원 산부인과의 모든 교수진과 임상강사 및 전공의들은 ‘최선의 진료, 첨단의학연구, 우수 의료인력 양성을 통해 국민보건 향상에 기여’라는 삼성서울병원의 설립이념을 달성하고 최고의 산부인과로 거듭나기 위한 노고를 아끼지 않았습니다. 이와 같은 노력으로 삼성서울병원 산부인과는 진료 및 연구에서 비약적인 발전을 거듭하였고, 2005년에는 외래 연인원 76,252명, 수술 4,969건, SCI 논문 21편 등을 기록하였습니다. 이외에도 부인-종양학, 모성-태아의학, 부인-내분비학 등 각 분야에서 삼성서울병원 산부인과를 자랑할만한 눈부신 발전과 업적을 이루었으나 이번에 또 하나의 자랑거리가 생겼습니다. 바로 국내 최초로 산과 초음파 핸드북을 발간하게 된 것입니다.
산과학에 초음파가 도입된 지도 어언 40년 가까운 시간이 흘렀습니다. 급변하는 의료의 발전과 더불어 초음파 기기는 비약적인 발전을 거듭하였고, 초음파를 이용한 다양한 태아 기형의 산전 진단 기법도 해가 다르게 발전하고 있습니다. 우리나라에서도 산과 초음파에 관심을 가지고 있는 많은 의사들이 다양한 연구를 하고 있고, 산과 초음파에 관련된 책들도 이미 여러 기관 또는 개인에 의해 출판되었습니다. 그러나 외래와 병실에서 손쉽게 참고할 수 있는 산과 초음파 책은 본 Handbook of Ultrasonography in Obstetrics가 처음인 것으로 생각됩니다.
초음파는 눈으로 보는 것이 아니라 머리로 보는 것이라고 생각합니다. 초음파 화면을 통해 관찰되는 소견의 의미를 정확하게 알고 있어야 정확한 태아의 상태를 진단 및 감별할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 동반 기형 유무를 확인하기 위한 추가 검사를 하거나 필요한 처치를 하고 태아의 예후를 상담할 수 있기 때문입니다. 또한 초음파는 다른 진단법과는 달리 실시간(real-time) 관찰이 가능하다는 장점이 있으므로 순식간에 지나가는 화면들을 실시간으로 머리 속에서 정리를 해야 합니다. 그러므로 많은 초음파 지식을 가지고 있을수록 더욱 정확한 진단을 할 수 있습니다. 초음파 지식은 초음파 검사자 스스로 초음파 책을 공부함으로써 얻을 수 있지만 그 많은 내용을 정리하여 늘 머리 속에 넣어둘 수는 없습니다. 그러므로 임상에서 초음파 검사를 하는데 있어서 신속한 참고를 하는데 도움이 되고자 정리를 한 것이 본 Handbook of Ultrasonography in Obstetrics입니다.
본 Handbook of Ultrasonography in Obstetrics가 산과 초음파 검사를 하는 많은 개원의, 전공의 그리고 초음파 기사 - 특히 이제 겨우 산과 초음파에 첫 발을 내디딘 분들께 - 큰 도움을 드릴 수 있게 되길 바랍니다. 그리고 초판을 내면서 미진한 부분이 다소 있더라도 양해를 해주시고, 지속적인 수정.보완을 통해 보다 많은 산부인과 의사들에게 도움이 되도록 노력할 것을 약속 드립니다.
