컴퓨터 및 IT 기술의 발달에 의해 심초음파 검사를 통해 점점 더 많은 의료 정보를 정확히, 그리고 신속하게 얻을 수 있게 되었
습니다. 또한 기기의 경량화, 소형화로 인하여 언제 어디서든 심장을 평가하는 유용한 검사가 되었습니다. 따라서 심장 내과 의
사는 물론 심장 질환을 다루는 다른 분야 의료진들도 심초음파 검사에 관심을 기울이고 있습니다. 현재까지 심초음파 검사를 배
울 수 있는 우리말로 된 교과서로는 한국 심초음파학회에서 발간한 “임상 심초음파학”이 대표적인데, 그 내용의 질이나 양에
서 매우 우수한 교과서입니다. 그렇지만, 그 양이 방대하고 수준이 깊어서 처음 시작하는 분들이나, 혹은 심장 내과의사가 아닌
의료진에게는 다소 버거울 수도 있어, 조금 더 간략한 교육자료가 필요한 실정이었습니다. 최근, 다양한 의학분야의 간단한 요점
정리로 이름 높은 워싱턴 매뉴얼 시리즈의 일환으로 심초음파 분야가 새로 발간되었는데, 그 내용이 간략하고 이해하기 쉽게 정
리되어 있어, 심초음파 검사를 시행하는 의료진께 유용하리라 생각하였습니다. 특히, 함께 동반된 다양한 동영상 파일은 움직이
는 심장의 구조와 기능을 쉽게 이해하는데 크나큰 도움이 될 것으로 여겨집니다. 이에 삼성서울병원의 심초음파를 담당하는 의사
들이 힘을 모아, 가능한 한 쉽고 이해가 잘 되도록 우리말로 번역하게 되었습니다. 이 책은, 양이 많지 않음에도 불구하고, 심
장 초음파의 기본 원리는 물론, 우리가 임상에서 흔히 보는 심장질환이 그림과 동영상을 위주로 알기 쉽게 설명되어 있습니다.
따라서, 심초음파에 익숙하지 않은 의료진이라도 쉽게 읽고 이해하고 실제 검사에 적용할 수 있도록 도와줄 것이라 믿습니다.
그동안 번역을 위하여 기꺼이 노력을 아끼지 않은 여러 교수님들께 이 지면을 빌어 감사 드립니다. 특히, 번역할 원고의 분배와
접수를 맡아 귀찮은 업무를 뒤에서 말없이 조절해준 박성지 교수님의 열정이 없었다면 이렇게 좋은 책이 나오지 못하였을 것이
라 생각하기에, 다시 한 번 박성지 교수님의 노고에 깊이 감사 드립니다. 또한 좋은 책을 선정하여, 읽기 편하고 쉬운 책을 만들
고자 노력해준 가본의학에도 감사 드립니다. 아무쪼록 이 책을 통해 심초음파에 관심을 갖고 시행하고자 하는 많은 의료진에게
좀 더 알기 쉽고 실질적인 도움이 될 수 있다면 고생한 역자들의 땀방울이 보람이 되리라 믿습니다.

<머리말>
Beep! Beep! Beep! The on-call pager signals another patient in need of cardiology consultation in the middle of the
night. An echocardiogram is not an infrequent request as part of that consultation at our hospital and many others
across the country. Yet, as a cardiology fellow faced with a wide array of new procedures and knowledge, the ability to
adequately perform and interpret an echocardiogram remains a daunting task. There are a number of excellent,
comprehensive textbooks regarding echocardiography. However, our fellows have frequently complained that there is
no "handbook?that they have found useful to carry as an introduction to this field or as a reminder of the critical
elements and findings of an echocardiographic examination. The primary goal of this book, therefore, has been to bridge
this gap that a novice to this field experiences but also to provide succinct and useful tips that highlight the
amazing depth and diagnostic utility of this modality.
Despite a challenging economic environment, the role and use of echocardiography continues to grow in the care of
cardiac patients. This is related to this technique's wide availability, ease of application, lack of harmful radiation
and comprehensive anatomic and hemodynamic information that is provided on a real-time basis. The technology has
continued to evolve to not only increase the quality and accuracy of this information but also extend its use to
practitioners outside of cardiology. The use of handheld ultrasound devices, for example, is now part of reality, and
emergency departments and intensive care physicians in particular have used this technology to rapidly evaluate
patients with cardiac complaints. This book will be a valuable resource for all those physicians interested in this
field.
Finally, this book was conceived and written by our cardiology fellows, who have worked and trained in a busy academic
hospital. In their exposure to interesting and challenging cases, they provide a unique perspective, from a trainee's
point of view, as to what constitutes critical pieces of knowledge to be gained in this field. We hope that this book
imparts not only this fundamental understanding of echocardiography but also an enthusiasm for further knowledge in
this area.
